Travel as a Standardised Path of Existential Space

Standardising makes mass tourism possible and provides the travel industry with the biggest profits. As an institutionalised form of reach, travel is a standardised path in our existential space. Travel in the domains and centres of the level of 'geography' is made possible and easy by the travel industry. Our need to balance home and reach has become a battleground of industries that profit from providing apparently efficient ways of reaching. In the process of becoming institutionalised, reach forms convention-filled discourses within which reaching is considered worthwhile. This does not apply to travel only; every aspect of reach is subjected to the lures of various industries with promises of more and better reach. Overt institutionalisation of reach means that it loses some elements for which it is desired. The answer from the industries lies in inventing more and more adventurous ways to reach. In travel this can mean new 'unspoilt' destinations or special kind of adventurous activities like abseiling and bungey-jumping. Another possibility for the traveller would be to attempt to reach with as little help from the travel industry as possible. This was originally the idea of backpacking. The problem is that as many people start to do so, it soon becomes institutionalised and develops its own standard discourse. It is no wonder that the Kuhnian idea of paradigmatic cycles springs to mind. Creation and observation of certain standards creates ideas opposed to those standards, and in time these ideas themselves form into new standards in turn.
